Dragon Ball FighterZ accomplishes what so few games based on the Dragon Ball franchise have: it makes you feel powerful. That sounds like a pretty simple thing, but when we’re talking “I can blow up a planet by pointing my finger at the ground” levels of power, it’s actually quite a daunting task. Developer Arc System Works has mixed equal parts fan service and fighting game expertise, whipping up a lightning-fast and surprisingly brutal 2D fighter that plays as good as it looks (and it looks really damn good). If anything could get you to start practicing your Kamehameha form again, FighterZ is it. Sam Prell  9,923,485 plays Rockstar Games finally deliver one of the most requested sequels of all time in this breathtaking open world western. Seemingly set to offer a twist on The Magnificent Seven, players will take on the identity of outlaw Arthur Morgan and partner with the Van der Linde gang to make their mark on the American frontier. Expect a lengthy story campaign set before 2010’s Red Dead Redemption, but the real revelation could be the (still-undetailed) online features – Rockstar has had several years of Grand Theft Auto Online to prepare for whatever cowboy delights they unleash here. Due out Spring 2018 for PS4 and Xbox One. Battlefield 1’s single-player is split up into six separate War Stories’, each of which follows a different protagonist and explores a different element of WWI combat, from trench warfare to tanks and early airships. There’s an emphasis all the way through on the horrors of war, backed up by sobering statistics and facts about the real-life conflict. Final Fantasy 7 may be a great game (although there are plenty who would argue it’s not even the best FF game) for the platform it was designed for, but it doesn’t belong on a “best PC Game” list. The PC port of this game is one of the most wretched playing experiences I’ve ever had with a game on the PC platform. Skullgirl’s fantastic soundtrack and art style make it a winner right off the bat (think sci-fi anime meets the gothic art deco stylings of Batman: The Animated Series), and surprisingly deep beat ’em up gameplay provides a solid core to the game that skilled players can really get in to. Sure, for those with no honor there’s an auto-fight mode you can switch on which takes care of basic moves, but if you just save it for a crowded subway, Skullgirls offers a frantic feast for the fingers. Star Wars is one of the best offline RPG Android games ported to Android from PC. The Knights of the Old Republic has a lengthy story with many ends depending on the choices made by you while playing. The graphics are attractive, and you can ask questions if you are confused about the game. Arena Of Valor is a 5v5 MOBA (multiplayer online battle arena) game developed by Tencent games, makers of the smash hit League Of Legends. In China the game has been available in various incarnations, but it has only recently made its way to western markets. As the name implies, Quizoid is a simple quiz game which can also be played offline where you have to answer questions. It has over 7000 questions divided into six levels. Quiz and puzzle lovers would enjoy having this game on their phones. It can also make a fun game to play at parties. Designed as a creativity incubator for just about all VR-appropriate ages, Fantastic Contraption (about $20) lets players design whatever they want. The game features tutorial rooms to introduce you to gameplay, a campaign with three difficulty settings, and interesting challenge levels to beat. When you die – and certainly you will – the next incarnation of the dungeon will be different than the last time. If you like the style of tower defense the Kingdom Rush series does so well, you’ll definitely like Iron Marines. This game is a newer effort from the same people, Ironhide Game Studio, and takes much of the same great action into the future. Instead of knights and archers, you’ll be playing with futuristic soldiers and snipers. Fight aliens and mechas as you strategize the best way to beat the level at hand. But what’s cool about this version, is there is even more focus on special characters — individual heroes with unique abilities you can bring along for the fight with your other units. From the creators of the original Dirt Trackin game comes Dirt Trackin Sprint Cars, which offers six tracks and a huge range of cars to choose from. Not only can you race by yourself, but you can also race in multiplayer mode in a range of different difficulty levels. There are caveats to getting the most from the game, however: you must use a wheel, and switch off all of the assists – if you are the kind of player who prefers the chase cam view, this is not the game for you. But if you are prepared to fully immerse yourself in this demanding racer, you will discover the most rewarding videogame driving model yet created. *** CASINO GAMES GALORE! *** Are the odds in your favor? Court Lady Luck and play Casino games like Texas Hold’em, Black Jack, Roulette, Golf, and several others! The advent of so-called “sandbox” games, which give players more freedom in choosing how to explore the environment, which missions to embark upon and what order to progress in has also served to make games more character-driven and involving. (“Fallout 3,” for example, builds up a karmic profile of the player based on decisions in how to advance through missions.) These best storyline games build on the gameplay and graphics with genuinely good stories.  I literally just signed up (Hi RPS LOOOONG time reader) to second (loudly) subdog’s nomination for inclusion of Wing Commander Privateer, at least I guess that’s the game you mean since I cant think of any others called Privateer! (plus your list of games missing from the RPS list matches mine quite closely). Goes back to nostalgia, I guess, considering how many hours I spent on it as a kid on my grandpa’s PC. It took me to a massive universe full of potential in a way no other game had. I still play it to this day, and think the (for its time) groundbreaking graphics and sense of being a small cog in a larger universe stands up to modern versions of the same thing such as Elite Dangerous (and yes, controversially, I would consider Privateer to be a better game than the original Elite). Also, discovering the most profitable drug smuggling route was immensely satisfying, especially when you realise that fully upgraded engines mean you can just afterburn away from any Confed patrols you can’t handle. I love me some smuggling (I’ll smuggle the hardest, most dangerous and most profitable drugs, but for some reason people smuggling and slave trading was a step too far and I never did it on principle. Go figure). There’s also an 8 system run through Kilrathi space that is hard as nails but fun to try. “Novel sums up Tooth and Tail, on the whole, rather effectively. It’s unlikely to draw many away from their chosen traditional RTS, but it doesn’t need to. With its rapid battles, low barrier for entry and couch or online co-op, it’s the sort of thing that’s great to pick up and play on a whim.” Verdict: A deep, and potentially rewarding alternative to Hearthstone that suffers from underwhelming art design and desperately needs an injection of players to grow the scene. 323.988.1189 info@play-losangeles.com Final Fantasy 7 may be a great game (although there are plenty who would argue it’s not even the best FF game) for the platform it was designed for, but it doesn’t belong on a “best PC Game” list.
